There is something very interesting and unique to be found in the village of Trunyan which is situated on the edge of Lake Batur. The village is famous for its distinctive funeral custom, in which the corpse is placed on the ground and allowed to rot. In other places in Bali, the corpse is either buried or cremated, but in Trunyan rather than this conventional process of burial, the corpses are covered only by a few strands of cloth and then simply placed onto the earth after which they are covered with woven bamboo and protected only by a temporary fence of pointed bamboo sticks are then allowed to decompose. Surprisingly, the scent of decay does not seem to spread at all.

Locals have their own distinct methods for determining which graveyard is the correct one.
