This little-known beachfront resort is the kind of idyllic tropical escape you’d find in the Maldives — except it’s in Bali and a quarter of the price.

It’s a mesmerising rhythm of gentle sounds, a perfect accompaniment to a Balinese massage with frangipani oil.

After a while, the noise of a chugging engine breaks the rhythm.

When I look up from the massage table to check the source of the racket, I see an old wooden boat in a lagoon, its blue deck matching the colour of the tropical water where turtles swim. In the distance there are volcanic mountains and jungle. The day is warm, like every day here.

The eco-friendly is so new that hardly any Australians have stayed, just in-the-know expats from Jakarta and Denpasar.

“This is like the Maldives of Bali, but at quarter of the price of the Maldives,” says Robert Kelsall, the property’s general manager.

Staff in safari uniforms and pith helmets greet resort, offering cool refresher towels and tropical juices.

There are 24 luxury canvas safari tents imported out of Africa, perfect for couples, and a handful one and two-bedroom tent villas for families.
