Indonesia's first private airport is set to open up on Bintan Island in Riau Islands province by the end of 2018 following approval from the Transportation Ministry last year.
The airport will be located inside the Bintan Resorts area, close to Bintan's Raja Haji Fisabilillah International Airport and the Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam. It is said that the airport will be used primarily to support tourism in the area.
PT Bintan Aviation Investments managing director Michael BK Budy said the airport would be constructed without using state funds and would be supervised by the ministry.
According to kompas.com, the initial investment for the airport is between US$100 and $150 million.
