The Lempuyang temple is one of Bali’s oldest temple, believed to predate the majority of other Bali Hindu temples. Located in East of Bali, in the highlands of Mount Lempuyang. In addition, the temple is also one of the most highly regarded temples.

The Lempuyang is also a part of the Sah Kahyangan (the six temples of the world), dedicated to the supreme God, the “Sang Hyang Widi Wasa.” There are seven levels of temples altogether. Like Besakih and Tanah Lot, Lempuyang is also one of the Island’s “nine directional temple,” functioning as a protector of Bali from evil spirits.

Due to its height of 1,175 meters above the sea level, the journey to reach the top (the highest levels) of the temple takes 1,700 steep staircases. However, once you arrive on the top, the view is worth it. It is believed by the locals that on the way up you shouldn’t complain. If you do, the journey will be harder. Moreover, it is important to maintain respectful behavior while visiting the temple. The temple is built in the year of 91 AD. According to the Balinese, every Balinese Hindu should visit the temple at least once in 10 years.
