Bali
is the most popular overseas destination for Australians after New
Zealand – more than one million of us will visit next year.
We love its sunsets and surf, its family-friendly resorts and luxury accommodation.
Here are the best new resorts, restaurants and experiences that visitors can look forward to next year.
INSTAGRAMMERS WILL LOVE
Taking shape 150m above sea level on the cliffs of Uluwatu on Bali’s south
coast, oneeightyº will stake a claim as the latest addition to the
island’s stellar line-up of internationally renowned beach clubs when it
opens on June 1.During the day, oneeightyº will be a 60-seat
family restaurant.At night,it’ll turn into a 200-capacity
sand-bottomed nightclub dotted with palm trees. The complex will feature
highly instagramable features like a rooftop tennis court, bowling
alleys and a private subterranean dining room set in a cave.oneeightyº
will also incorporate four “super villas” with natural stone pools, cigar rooms, wraparound decks and uninterrupted Indian Ocean views.
GETTING MARRIED?
Also new for Uluwatu’s “millionaire row” for 2017 is Villa Markisa, a
palatial five-bedroom villa set within the grounds of Pandawa Cliff
Estate. Hovering over the ocean with rolling green lawns, a clifftop
infinity-edge pool and a romantic one-bedroom master suite with its own
living room and pool, Villa Markisa can accommodate up to 100 wedding
guests. But when combined with four other interconnected villas at
Pandawa Cliff Estate, the new addition raises the ante to 400 wedding
guests and 21 double rooms.
SHARE A PLATE
Large plates with bold Asian flavours to share among friends: the concept
turned Mama San, the warehouse-style fine-dining restaurant of
Australian chef Will Meyrick, into a Balinese culinary institution. But
as the market moves, so do savvy chefs. Set on Mama San’s second floor,
The Tasting Club is a new casual late-night dining option where guests
sit at the bar and watch chefs use Japanese culinary techniques to
create tapas-size dishes like tiger prawn ceviche, flame torch Black
Angus and soft-shelled crab sushi rolls. Brazilian mixologist Raphael
has also created a new cocktail list to match.
OR A PIZZA
Maurice Terzini of Icebergs Dining Room fame is about to join a conga line of
A-list restaurateurs who opened shop in Bali. His first foray on the
island, Da Maria, starts trading mid-November on Seminyak’s bustling
Petitenget St.Da Maria will present a modern interpretation of the classic courtyard restaurants of the Isle of Capri.
AND FOR THRILLSEEKERS ...
Rolling off the edge of a pristine jungle on the island of Java west of Bali,
Grajagan or G-Land is one of the world’s most famous left-hand surf
breaks. But getting there from Bali – a day-long odyssey by bus, ferry
and taxi – can be a real drag.Enter Tropicsurf, a luxury surfing
adventure company that specialises in taking travellers to secluded
waves in places such as Costa Rica and the Maldives. In 2017, Tropicsurf
will drop into Bali with helicopter daytrips to G-Land departing from
the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay. Cut straight out of the
script of Point Break, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure will set you and your mates back a mere $10,000.
