in Denpasar feature a neatly arranged layout within a dedicated building, while
some others offer a combination such as the famous Ubud Art Market that is
always crowded with domestic and international shoppers looking for a great
deal, from unique motif batiks, intricate Balinese carvings to the most iconic
knick-knacks you won’t find outside the island. Here we present you with our
short list of the best Bali art markets that are special shopping destinations
you can find in the island’s major areas, so you can get going on your Bali
shopping adventures. Even if you aren’t in for the haggling or buying anything,
a visit to any of these art markets provides you with a glimpse into the
wonderful artistry and creativity of the island’s craftsmen.
1.Ubud Art Market
The Ubud Art Market, locally
referred to as 'Pasar Seni Ubud' is famous as the most visited art market in
Bali. The market forms one of Ubud’s central landmarks, located just across the
main Jalan Raya Ubud road from the Puri Saren Royal Palace. The market plays a
central role in Ubud’s social and economic life, and is actually comprised of
two sections: the eastside part serves as the main traditional morning market
where locals shop for daily groceries and household items, while at the art
market, you will find unique items from colourful silk scarves, tropical design
shirts, handmade woven and cotton bags, baskets or straw hats; statues, kites
and many other hand-crafted items. The art market is open every day except on ‘Nyepi’
or the Saka New Year, when the whole island literally shuts down for a whole
day.
2.Sukawati Art Market
Sukawati Art Market, also known by
its local name 'Pasar Seni Sukawati', is the most longstanding art market in
Bali, and regarded as the island’s mother of art markets. Named after the
village where it resides (famous for its communities of traditional artists,
comprising sculptors, painters and dancers) Sukawati is often a highlighted
tour itinerary and the first that comes to mind for a myriad of souvenir
choices at great bargain prices. The art market comprises a main two-storey
building that is filled with many different stalls, some specialising in garuda
sculptures and Kamasan-style paintings, while many others feature similar items
– making your bargaining effort for the best price much easier. With sufficient
time on your hands, it is best to patiently browse through and ask for
comparison before finally striking a deal. Sukawati Art Market is located on
the main Jalan Raya Sukawati Road in the Gianyar Regency, approximately two
hour’s transfer from Kuta and Denpasar
