Imagine a backpack full of fantastic handicrafts and
organic products which were not only produced by local producers in Bali but
also help to drive the pandemic to a community economy. That's Bali Ba of
Hope.
In 2020, several positive community and charity
movements began, the silver line of the pandemic, which highlighted Bali's
vibrant, community-oriented society.
One of the older stories was the return of a village
to its long-abandoned origins, trying to find alternate income sources (Read:
How Covid-19 Brought About the Rebirth of a Traditional Weaving Village). It
was the start of the Togetherness project, which Bali locals started up many
years and which has belonged to the Ubud local community.
To begin or resurrect the home business, the project
of the Togetherness (or Kebersamaan) has been on the same course as a weaving
village. It not only provides jobs and reduces dependency, but also re-enhances
declining industries in difficult times. Work with ikat, coffee, and honey were
included. They want to help communities in need to supply meals and raw
materials.
Bali Bag of Hope
One of the creative financing initiatives of the
Togetherness Project is the Bali Bag of Hope. All the goods of local
craftspeople and farmers are curated into a magnificent package through this
effort. The acquisition of each Bag of Hope benefits all craftsmen, farmers,
food producers, workers, drivers, etc.
What’s in each
bag?
·
Handwoven bespoke
artisan ikat made by the Togetherness Project’s Weaving Circle.
·
Beautiful and
playful handmade reusable bag made from recycled rice bags, crafted by a
special needs Balinese mother.
·
Hand-roasted
artisan coffee beans from Munduk, picked, roasted, and selected by a team of
men and women of the village (250g).
·
Medicinal clove
oil from Cempaga
·
Medicinal nectar
(made by tiny stingless bees) from Tanah Aron, curated and kept by 7 beekeeping
families.
·
Vegetable seedlings
were placed in a handmade weaved bamboo basket and sourced for the organic
farms in Pesalakan.
·
Traditional
handmade placenta pottery bowl to create a birthing ceremony of anything you
are birthing into the world.
At the moment there are just 50 bags, and the money is
distributed and stimulates the economy because they are filled with local
goods. Food packs for the most vulnerable community, delivery drivers, food
organizers, and chefs will also be used to buy products for the Togetherness
project.
Each
bag costs a total of IDR 850.000 and can be pre-ordered here.
Meet the Makers
For
anyone who pre-orders or would like to buy a Bag of Hope is invited to an event
at Soulshine Ubud on 21 March 2021 to meet the artisans and producers yourself.
At the event, you will also meet with Balinese
officials from 11 am-4 pm and lead this project to produce sustainable economic
development on the island. Learn about their lives, history, and vision for a
brighter future, which will create sustainable development for Bali outside
tourism. Free entry for everyone.
