An ancient tunnel found in Buleleng regency of Bali may date back all the way back to 11th century as per the expert archeologists. Construction workers discovered this last month while building a dam in the area.
This tunnel is located inside the area of Tamblang Dam which is being developed at the borders of Sawan and Kubutambahan districts. Initially it was thought to have origins from Dutch colonial periods in Indonesia. However as the investigations advanced for its discovery on November 28th, it has revealed a possibility of it being much older.
Head of Archaeology Center in Denpasar, I Gusti Made Suarbawa stated on Thursday that based on its dimensions the indication is from the time of ancient Bali kingdoms because of its similarity with another tunnel from that period.
This discovered tunnel is around 480 meters in length and narrow enough
to be traversed by the average adult. Suarbawa said the tunnel may have been built as a waterway for irrigation on the paddy fields.
“It’s possible that this tunnel was from around the 11th century. This is looking at the context and location, which makes it very possible that it originated from the ancient Bali period,” Suarbawa said.
